The new EU hand baggage regulations apply to all flights departing from airports in the European Union, Egypt, Great Britain, Mauritius, Mombasa, the Seychelles and Switzerland, regardless of their destination and the airline's country of establishment. On all flights departing from the EU and on connecting flights from Europe, liquids may only be taken into the aircraft cabin under restrictions since November 6, 2006. This includes all domestic and intra-European flights.
However, liquid and gel-like products, such as care and cosmetic items, are permitted in carry-on baggage, provided they comply with the following regulations:
- Containers with liquids and similar products may hold up to 100 ml (the maximum printed quantity applies).
- All individual containers must be transported completely in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag (e.g. commercially available plastic bags with a so-called "zip closure" ) with a maximum capacity of one liter.
- One bag may be used per person. This bag must be presented separately at the security check. Medication and special food ( e.g. baby food ) required on board during the flight may be transported outside the plastic bag.
These items must also be presented at the security checkpoint. Articles and bags that do not comply with the requirements may not be taken on board.
A similar regulation has already been in force since September 29, 2006 on flights and connecting flights to the USA with 90 ml per container. However, 100 ml per container is currently accepted at German airports on flights to the USA.
Duty free items (such as beverages or cosmetics) purchased on the day of the flight in the duty free area of airports in the EU or on board an aircraft of an EU airline, e.g. on a Condor flight, may be carried in a sealed bag, provided a proof of purchase from the same day is available. Subject to change without notice.
